Frugal Anchorage Happenings - Weekend of January 25 (Including Anchorage Symphony!)

Anchorage Symphony FREE Neighborhood Concert

Saturday, Jan 25 2:00p to 3:00p
The Anchorage Symphony invites you and your family to a free Anchorage Symphony Neighborhood Concert, Saturday, January 25, at 2pm at Bartlett High School. An hour in length, this casual concert features audience favorites including Overture of 1812, Ride of the Valkyries, Superman and much, much more!
The concert is free and open to the public on a first, come, first served basis; seating begins at 1:30pm. Arrive early as seating is limited!

See how fiber is spun into yarn at the Eagle River Spinners meeting. If you are interested in trying your hand at spinning, call Sandy Quimby at 696-2680 ahead of time to arrange for an extra wheel and fiber

noon SOURDOUGH
Join us around the wood stove to learn the secrets of sourdough. Learn how to maintain and cook with your own sourdough starter. We will make sourdough pancakes for you to sample until supplies run out.

1pm SLEDS AND DOGS
Before railroads, airplanes and automobiles, winter transportation in Alaska was primarily done by sleds. We’ll have a vintage dog sled and Crow Pass roadhouse artifacts. Learn how mushing back then differs from today’s winter sport.

2pm HISTORY OF THE IDITAROD TRAIL
Learn about the history of the Iditarod Trail and its roadhouses and towns along the way from BLM Trail Coordinator Kevin Keeler.

3pm POETRY RECITATION
Today’s featured poet is Robert Service from the Klondike. Hear his newest poems fromThe Spell of the Yukon and Other Verses.

4 pm MUSIC BY THE WOODSTOVE
Bring your fiddle, banjo or guitar for some old-time jammin’. Clapping and foot stomping allowed!

Hungry for a 25 cent bowl of hot bean soup, or some fresh-baked goods with coffee, tea, or hot chocolate? A silver dollar buys you a fine roadhouse meal at 1913 prices!
